The Wayne City Board of Education held its regular April meeting on Thursday, April 18, 2024.

Information from administration was shared with the Board that included:

  • Success of Family Reading Night- Mrs. Lisa Jackson planned a fun night of activities. The number of volunteers that gave their time to help with the event is greatly appreciated as well as the PTO for providing refreshments.

  • Cecilia Choate and Joey Greenwalt were crowned prom queen and king. Prom and post-prom were a success thanks to the planning of Angie Kelly and the help of many volunteers.

  • Harper Beehn and Hannah Smith were the school winners for the Modern Woodmen Speech Contest. They advanced to the county contest where Harper placed first. She will advance to the regional contest held sometime in May.

  • Upcoming events for the Senior Class of 2024 include a graduation breakfast on May 2nd, Senior Awards Day on May 3rd, and Baccalaureate on May 5th.

  • Cody Ngueyen was named the April Senior of the Month.

The Board approved several consent agenda items including minutes from the March meeting, eliminating closed session minutes from October 2022, several field trips requests, and the FY 25 board meeting dates.

The Board acted on the following personnel items. The Board accepted a letter of retirement for Laura Miller, high school family & consumer science teacher, effective at the conclusion of the 2026-2027 school year. The Board approved the requested transfer of position for Carissa Seidel from 5th grade to math interventionist and employment of Misty Boyd as a long term substitute teacher. Finally, the Board approved the employment of Payton Sowa as the JH Boys Varsity Basketball Coach and Justin Hodges as the HS Girls Head Basketball Coach.

In other action, Phase One of the outdoor learning/play area was approved. A PayPal account was approved so that the district can accept grant funds for Wayne County Literacy Fest. The Prairie Farms dairy bid was accepted. The Board gave authorization to begin with the development of the FY25 budget as well authorization to spend from July 1 to the budget adoption. Approval was given to invest two certificates of deposit with FNB at 5.10% for $500,000 each. Lastly, the the Board approved a two year certified collective bargaining agreement proposal.

The next regularly scheduled meeting is Thursday, May 16, at 6:00 pm in the administrative conference room.
