The Wayne City Board of Education held its regular May meeting on Thursday, May 16, 2024.
Information from administration was shared with the Board that included:
End of the activities and trips.
Recognition of retirees, Ruth Kissner, Becky Creighton, Linda Legg, and Jim Reynolds, for their dedicated service to the district.
Junior high students participating in the SIJHSAA State Track Meet at DuQuoin: Anistyn White, Randa Spell, Raelyn Cox, Chase Smith, and Zayne Lowery.
The senior awards program provided our graduating seniors with over $474,000 in scholarship money. $99,800 of the scholarship money came from the Wayne City Scholarship Foundation.
The Board approved several consent agenda items including minutes from the April meeting , eliminating closed session minutes from November 2022, the FFA trip to State Convention in June, and working with Wayne County to establish a SRO Program.
The Board acted on the following personnel items. Sarah Childers was hired as an elementary teacher to fill a fifth grade position. The Board approved the voluntary transfer of position of Derek Mays to high school science and Chris Drone to junior high science. The administrative contract of Stephen Ellis as the junior high/high school principal was renewed.
In other action, the Board approved the Consolidated District Plan. Action was also taken to set the time in conjunction with the June BOE meeting for a Public Hearing for the Amended Budget. The district has annually approved an amended budget at the end of the fiscal year to have an accurate financial picture to be able to plan for the next fiscal year. PRESS Policy 114 updates were approved. A new copier lease program with GFI was given approval for the copier in the main office. Grades K-4 will have a new reading curriculum for the 2024-25 school year. The Board approved the adoption of HMH Into Reading Curriculum. All student fees, except the graduation fee for cap and gown, for 2024-2025 were waived. Adult breakfast and lunch prices were increased to meet state requirements. Adult breakfast will be $2.25 and lunch $3.75. Approval was given for the installation of a new server and for a partial computer upgrade. Finally, the Board gave approval for the application of the School Violence Prevention Program(SVPP) Grant which requires a 25% cost share.
The next regularly scheduled meeting is Thursday, June 20, at 6:00 pm in the administrative conference room.
